The Data Centers and Servers team decommissioned its 18th server room, freeing up 1,300 square feet for offices and labs for the Physics and Astronomy Department and reducing mechanical and electrical expenses.
Great progress has been made in the migration of hundreds of UI websites to the cloud website hosting provider Acquia. Information Technology Services has moved 350 sites it hosted on on-premises servers for various campus units (Drupal sites on the SiteNow service), and should have the remaining 150 done this week. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences finished migrating its 64 sites, and Nursing and Admissions completed their migrations. The Graduate College is finishing up and the College of Dentistry is next.
In partnership with campus units, the End User Support (EUS) project team continues to make good headway in implementation of its three sub-projects. Several units have or are in the process of transitioning to the centralized model for desktop support, device management, or help desk services.
The ITS Extended Technical Support (ETS) workgroup provides desktop support to users across campus. The group has seen significant growth in the past year through the OneIT End User Support initiative, enabling a new organizational structure to improve services for campus.
The OneIT Website Hosting Project initially focused on consolidating the number of Drupal instances across campus into a central service entity, but the team expanded its project scope after discovering that more savings could be had by moving web-hosting services to a cloud provider.
In future state planning retreats, campus IT leaders worked with management and organizations faculty to develop a shared vision for OneIT. An important piece of the vision is enhanced governance and prioritization processes to ensure that appropriate input is gathered for decisions on IT services and priorities.
